Search Tips

Searching our Catalogs

At the top and bottom of most of the Music Catalog pages is a search engine. By default, it is set to search all catalogs for one or more keywords. You can narrow your search by selecting just one catalog for a specific title, composer or even the item number.

General Search Tips

Avoid using small, connecting words like “and”, “the” or “le”. These words are too common and will confuse the search engine or return results not applicable to your intended search.

The more words you use to search by, the fewer (and more specific) your results will be. The fewer words you use, the more general your search will be, and the more results you will get. For example, if you're looking for a specific item like Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in the solo piano version, type “gershwin rhapsody solo.” If you’re interested in something more general, like seeing everything we have by Gershwin, just type “Gershwin.”

Avoid using punctuation in your searches. If you use punctuation (such as a comma, or quotation marks) that is not present in the record as we have it, you'll miss that item in your search results. Many items in our records omit commas in the title, for instance.

Be aware of multi-language possibilities. Some words in English might bring you unexpected results from other languages, and vice versa. For instance, the English verb “die” is also the German word meaning “the.”

In the Contents Search, use words only from the song title. This search only looks at the titles of the songs listed in the contents of collections.
